Facebook

So after months and months of avoiding it I have finally joined facebook.com. If you’ve ever talked to me about you’ll know that I think facebook.com is all that is ill and wrong with society today. The reason I joined is for one purpose only and that is to hunt down and destroy people in the game of assassins. I think it’s a very noble purpose. After all it is for money. Avishai was nice enough to compose the following obituary for my integrity which he placed on my wall:

Daniel Baronofsky’s integrity died 12:00 pm Tuesday September 13th 2005, at the age of several months. Baronofsky’s integrity, an outspoken opponent of the electronic partitioning of the cultural phenomenon known as “Facebook”, as well as an icon of the San Francisco Croquet Club, died peacefully, while sleeping, at his dorm in Waltham, after a short struggle of morals versus convenience which had spread throughout his body. Baronofsky was famous for such statements as “facebook is so gay and superficial” and “it is all that is ill in the world.” His wife Treo was at his side when his integrity stopped breathing.

p.s. you so want to be my friend on facebook!

Side Rants

-We started assassins this morning. So far I’ve made one kill and I’m after my next victim.

-This isn’t a real side rant. It’s just here so I can still put “side rants” at the top implying there is more then one. So at a quick glance it does look like I have side rants.

Hurricanes, Tsunamis and Disengagement

So in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina many people are trying to rationalize God’s actions by saying that this all happened because the USA pressured Israel to disengage from Gush Katif (Gaza). First I’ll make a general statement. God’s actions by definition cannot be rationalized. If any human could easily rationalize the way God worked he would no longer be God. Any attempt to rationalize is an attempt to bring comfort to oneself and should be acknowledged as such. It is comforting to a person to think you know the way the world works and why things are the way that they are.

Now to the specifics: Even if you want to rationalize God’s actions by saying that God was punishing the citizens of New Orleans because of the disengagement is foolish. I noted on Tonny’s blog that: “Yea I definitely think G-d decided to get even by killing thousands of black poor people who couldn't afford to evacuate. These people are the real movers and shakers in the political world who decided to put pressure on Israel to abandon Gaza.” And I stand by this statement. My point was that even for humans this thought was hardly rational let alone for God. My opinion is the same for people who make similar comments about the tsunami. While it is important to reflect on our own actions whenever a tragedy of this magnitude hits the world doing so in this method I’m sure doesn’t comfort the citizens of New Orleans or any of their relatives who may have lost family members or homes and I’d even venture to say that it is insensitive.

Side Rants

-First Shabbos at Brandeis this weekend. Have a good one wherever you are.

-Leaving for NY on Sunday. Hooray for inflated gas prices!

-Don’t you love it when a teacher assigns a paper due in less then a week from the first class? And you need a specific text for it and the university library and book store doesn’t have it? And don’t you love it when the paper is due on Tuesday and even if you had the text there is no way you’d get it done since you’ll be away Sunday and Monday for your cousin’s bat mitzvah?

-I’ll be at Dougie’s on 72nd street at 7:30 Sunday night. Let me know if you want to meet me.

-Wow two posts in one week! What has gotten into me?
